Falls Prevention Programme in Meltham 13th September – 29th November 2023

  • Did you know that 50% of all people over 80 and 30% of people over 65 fall every year?
  • After the first fall, two thirds will fall again within the year.
  • 95% of hip fractures are as a result of a fall.
  • Exercise-based physiotherapist-led programmes have been shown to be effective in reducing falls and fall-related broken bones.

Our physiotherapists are experienced in working with patients to improve balance, increase strength, and minimise risks to reduce the chance of falling.

We are now running a Falls Prevention Programme for the local community, in collaboration with the Meltham Carlile CIC, at the Carlile Institute in Meltham. This 12-week course consists of weekly 60-minute group workshops run by HCPC registered and Chartered Physiotherapists from JRM Physiotherapy. We are running these on a not-for-profit basis for the local community, and are grateful for the support provided by the Meltham Carlile CIC and Mayor of Meltham.

The programme costs £60 in total (for 12 workshops) and runs from 13th September  – 29th November 2023. The workshops will be run each Wednesday at 1.30pm – 2.30pm at the Carlile Institute. The first session (13th September) is an extended 90 minute session so will start at 1pm. Full payment is required upon booking. For details of how to book please keep reading below.

Who can attend the Falls Prevention Workshops?

These workshops are aimed at those concerned about age-related falls. Maybe you have noticed your balance is not what it used to be, or have found you have had a few stumbles, or are feeling nervous about stairs. These progressive group workshops will help improve balance, increase strength and raise awareness of risks.

As these are group workshops, they may not be suitable for people suffering from specific injuries or conditions which affect balance and mobility (such as vertigo or stroke-related mobility issues). Whilst our team are very experienced in treating these conditions, they may require 1:1 assessment and treatment at our clinic, so please get in touch with us by calling 01484 968017 or emailing admin@jrmphysio.com to discuss this with us before booking onto the falls programme. You may need to book in for a Physiotherapy Initial Assessment instead.

We welcome participants with complex conditions including parkinsons, dementia and alzheimers, but we do ask that if you suffer with dementia or alzheimers that a carer attends the sessions with you (carers are free of charge) so that they can provide you with the support you need to get the most out of these group classes.

What happens at the Falls Prevention Workshops?

The group workshops are held upstairs at the Carlile Institute (lift access is available). 16 places are available on a first-come-first-served basis.

Physiotherapists from JRM Physiotherapy will run these 60 minute sessions, which will include a mixture of group chair-based and standing exercises, plus some advice on managing falls-risks in the home and when out and about.

This is a 12-week progressive programme, and all participants are advised to attend all twelve sessions as well as undertaking their “homework” of exercises at home to get full benefit from the programme. As this is a not-for-profit programme, and we are unable to fill spaces if others drop out, we are afraid that refunds cannot be given to those who miss sessions or fail to complete the programme.

Where is the Falls Prevention Programme held?

The workshops are all held across the road from JRM Physiotherapy at:

Carlile Institute, Huddersfield Rd, Meltham, Holmfirth, HD9 4AG

There is a free public car park behind the Carlile Institute, and bus stops on Huddersfield Rd less than 100m from the building.

The workshops are held in the Jubilee Room upstairs in the Institute, which has lift access.
